The Trails

Views

  • Our first stop was the sunny knoll of the Sedge Meadow Trail.
  • Turkey vultures and even a black vulture were seen overhead.
  • Northern cardinals, cedar waxwings, dark-eyed junkos and others were in the brush all around.
  • In the area of the boardwalk, fox sparrow, purple finch and hermit thrush were notable finds.
  • Near where the bridge no longer is, Golden- and ruby-crowned kinglets challenged our necks.
  • An unafraid garter snake was spotted a little farther along the way.
  • The Cary Pines trail yealded some red-breasted nuthatches as we approached the Fern Glen.
  • On the way back, we found a fair, but not unmanageable puddle in the Old Gravel Pit.
  • As we came out into the Little Bluestem Meadow, a great blue heron rose out of the Gifford Garden and departed.
  • We took its place, had lunch, then we too departed.
