The Trails

Views

  • The peonies in Gifford Garden were spectacular.
  • In one corner of the garden lupines made them a nice background.
  • A number of insects were attracted to the goat's beard including more than one eight-spotted forester, a handsome day flying moth.
  • At the end of the Scotch Pine Allee, near trail marker post 6, I spotted an unusual leaf; It was that of the pink lady's-slipper, not seen in some years!
  • In the Old Gravel Pit, nearer to post 13 than 14, was a patch of tree-like club moss.
  • I'd never noticed honewort along the Wappinger Creek Trail before. Between posts 9 &apm; 10 was a spot with both normal and crinkled forms. The crinked form bay be in response to attack by another oganism. Investigation is in order...
  • Tucked under a cedar in the Old Pasture was a nice mushroom or two.

In the Fern Glen

  • In the 'Glen, American Ipecac was in full bloom.
  • White baneberry was forming berries.
  • When ripe, they are white with a black dot and are called doll's eyes.
  • This exotic comes up every year, and every year we try to figure out what it is.
  • Twinleaf has a seed pod that reminds me of the old Pezz dispenser.
  • In the meadow up the road on my way out, a little wood satyr paused long enough for just one more photo.
