Trail Report for Apr. 18, 2007

Notes and changes since last report:

The Trails

Along the Way

  • The one iris last week in the Gifford Gardens was joined by more this week.
  • I needed assistance IDing the Chionodoxa and Helleborus.
  • But the Scilla and snowdrops I knew well enough - I have them in my yard.
  • As I headed off down the Scotch Pine Alleé, I noted that it looked - and felt - more like March than April.
  • Not surprisingly, the Old Gravel Pit was deep today.
  • Even more impressive was the view looking back.
  • Thanks to a steel cable tether, the foot bridge by the "Appendix" was only shifted a bit and was still quite functional.
  • The Wappinger Creek Trail looked more like a creek bed.
  • Farther along, the foot bridge by trail marker #9 appeared unmoved.
  • My favorite view from the bluff showed the Creek still quite full.
  • At the Sedge Meadow Trail's board walk, the view was not at all remarkable.

In the Fern Glen

  • First stop was the bridge to look downstream.
  • And of course upstream.
  • Jan Leete had snapped almost the same shot near peak water.
  • After all that would you believe there was still some snow left at the deck? Compare to 2 weeks ago.
  • Last week's painted turtle was still sunning itself under overcast skies.
  • Last week's barred owl called again.
  • Last week's marsh marigold buds had opened.
  • Changing hats for a moment, I pulled up some of the winter's posts & burlap. Some were still wet & heavy.
  • And that was enough for one day.
