Trail Report for May 02, 2007

Notes and changes since last report:

The Trails

Along the Way

  • I thought I heard a pine warbler in the Scotch Pine Alleé. I was right.
  • Leaves were coming out on the honeysuckle in the Old Gravel Pit.
  • Going down the path, I came upon a pair of those curious, flower feeding bee flies. One's wings are invisible as they were beating.
  • Any bets how long the puddle will remain at the bottom of the path?
  • Canada mayflower was putting up a forest of leaves as usual near trail marker 12 on the Cary Pines Trail.
  • The many trout-lily at the far end of the Wappinger Creek Trail were in bloom.
  • Wood anemone blossoms can be quite pink before they open.
  • A very unafraid pheasant allowed reasonably close viewing on the Sedge Meadow Trail.

In the Fern Glen

  • I thought I had a shot of the shad bush in the Fern Glen.
  • The blossoms do show its apple family resemblence.
  • A dark bordered form marginata spring azure was obliviously nectaring on ground ivy.
  • Wild oats were blooming near the road.
  • Bellwort was clustered in many places.
  • I thought the old log and the twinleaf looked marvelous together.
  • Very similar to the Dutchman's breeches that was out earlier is squirrel corn.
  • Red trillium was at peak performance and greatly outnumbered the white trillium.
  • One thing in the Glen that I usually see along the Wappinger Creek Trail was cut-leaved toothwort. I didn't see it out there today.
  • A personal favorite, early meadow-rue reminds me of little lamp shades.
  • As I was leaving the Glen I came across one clump of false rue-anemone and had something to ponder along the way.
  • False rue-anemone... an anemone that looks like a rue...
    but this isn't it...
