Trail Report for Oct 24, 2007

Notes and changes since last report:

Let's Walk

The Trails

  • Lantana was still blooming in Gifford Gardens.
  • But, color was yealding to texture - the fern stalks were nice against the brick behind the container of blue fan flower.
  • Alot of leaves were down now, but some trees were holding on to theirs longer along the Sedge Meadow Trail.
  • A favorite view from the bluff on the Wappinger Creek Trail was not disappointing.
  • Christmas fern was looking like a place setting farther along the trail.
  • A single leaf of an oak seedling was a captivating study in color and pattern.
  • Exiting the Old Gravel Pit, I beheld another favorite view: the Gifford House across the Little Bluestem Meadow.

In the Fern Glen

  • The backhoe matched the color of the maple leaves.
  • It was there, of course, for the bridge work.
  • The water of the pond was marvelously black.
  • Around the pond and fen, the air was filled with the sounds of chickadees, and kinglets - both ruby and golden-crowned.
